Mauro Cordeiro talks to Rock Attitude about his Brazilian project Leatherjacks, just before the release of his third album.

Give us please a brief history of Leatherjacks:

– Hello everyone at Rock Attitude Greece! A real honor to be here and to participate this interview! Leatherjacks is a project I started out in 2016, with the “guts and nuts”, all by myself, to make music and to play what I’ve always dreamed: Rock ’N’ Roll, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

How can you describe your sound?

– I think my sound has the perfect spice of the 80s, in the right point and quantity haha. It sounds vintage and modern at the same time.

If you guys like Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Motorhead, Judas Priest, AOR, Hard Rock and Metal in general, you’ll love Leatherjacks. And I hope that even if you don’t like it at all, enjoy Leatherjacks too hahaha!

How did you first get in touch with Hard Rock music?

– I remember I was 5 years old, and always addicted to my mom’s LP with some movies soundtracks, and that was the Rocky one: Survivor – “Eye Of The Tiger” – This song… Was the entry for my addiction and passion for Rock music.

Who would have been the most influential musician for you and why?

– Vocally speaking: Dio and Bruce Dickinson. Two masters of Theatrical, Drama and amazing singers… Both Self-Taught, just like myself! Guitarrists: Many ones, but Adrian Smith is in my heart. His way to vibrate and to bend slowly, is totally amazing and sounds simply beautiful! I can say I was musically Alphabetized by Adrian.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

– I would love to make something with Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast). I personally believe we would write awesome smashing Metal hits. Dave Grohl would be also pretty cool! He seems to be a super easy going person and cherish by everyone, right? So… Super cool!

You are singing and playing all instruments by yourself. Is forming a full band something that you would try to?

– Yes! I had a lineup in 2017, but it failed, because no one was fully compromised… To me, it was super sad, because they were great musicians, but never had the proper time to really dedicated and to work with Leatherjacks.

I think that it was due to the brazilian culture, foccused on Cover songs instead of Original ones, so people rather to pick Cover bands.

In Brasil, if you believe in an Original music based band/project, you’re not a visionary, but actually a crazy person who still dreams or believes in something, and the act of writing your own songs seems to be heretic for the great majority of brasilian musicians… A real Shame.

You are about to release your third album “Surviving The Beginning Of The End”. Any details on the recordings?

– Yeah! The album has 12 songs that I wrote, arranged, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered absolutely everything, since the middle os 2021 up to now. Tough work, but its really worthy.

I personally believe, technically and musically speaking, that this album has the best sound, compared to the previous 2 albums I released, and it also has the most solid and mature lyrics and arrangements I’ve ever wrote. I also improved on drums, so the drum samples are much more realistic and much more complex and complete.

What is the story behind “Surviving The Beginning Of The End”?

– Surviving is a complex contexted album about the apocalyptical and armaggedon end times we are facing since 2001.

So I wrote (pretty discreetly) songs about the human misteries and conspiracies in and out this planet, our hidden history, wars, diseases and “plan”demics, the lack of love between each other, adventures, transhumanism, silicon valley, A.I., SciFi and polemics about the “machine” that surrounds us worldwide.

Are you responsible for the album artwork?

– Yes. I was encharged by all the concept and paintings.

What plans do you have to promote the album?

– I’m trying to form a good band here, and also doing amazong interviews, podcasts and media, or even pocket shows (alone) to promote the album. Lets see what fate is reserving to Leatherjacks.

Have you in plans to play your music live? Even with some session musicians?

– Absolutely! I really dream everday and everytime about it, and really hoping to do it as soon as possible!

So, that’s it. Thanks for this interview, the last words are yours.

– Likewise! I’m super grateful for our interview, and I’m really sorry for delaying a little bit to reply. But it was due to lots of hard work finishing the album, website, reels and posts for the followers and fans…
